Seven Northern Ireland chippies are in the running to be crowned UK independent fish and chip shop of the year.

The newly-opened Fish City on Belfast's Ann Street and Raffos on the Andersonstown Road are the city's contenders, up against the Spinnaker in Kilkeel, Superbites in Crossmaglen, The Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon, The Friary in Carrickfergus and The Frying Squad in Bangor.

They have all been shortlisted for the UK 2017 National Fish and Chip Awards, the finals of which are to be held in London in January.

Widely considered as the Oscars of the fish frying industry, the contenders have had to fry at the top of their game to reach this stage, with menu innovation, sustainable sourcing, customer service, staff training and promotional flair all being considered by the judges.

Over the coming weeks, the chip shops will be subjected to further judging as they receive mystery shopping assessments.
