Sharp spike in crime at Magilligan prison
Crime has quadrupled inside Londonderry’s Magilligan prison over the past five years.
Criminal acts rocketed within the prison between 2007 and 2011 with a total of 81 crimes reported to police caused at the jail by destructive inmates.
In 2007, only six crimes of criminal damage were reported, according to the Londonderry Sentinel, with levels rising to 15 incidents in 2008 and 22 in 2009.
While 2010 witnessed a slight decrease of just 12 incidents, it rose again to 26 last year.
Throughout Northern Ireland’s prisons there were some 1,262 incidents of criminal damage but Justice Minister David Ford said just one prisoner has been convicted of the crimes, though dozens of cases are currently with the Public Prosecution Service.
