Shoplifter fined £300 over New Year spree

ALAN ERWIN

A disabled former occupational therapist stole nearly £400 worth of goods in a New Year's Eve shoplifting spree, a court has heard.

Christine Miller took clothes, cosmetics and candles from Marks & Spencer's Newtownabbey branch during a trip to the sales.

Her unsuspecting husband was waiting outside and only found out when security staff told him she had been arrested for theft.

The 56-year-old, of Lisnagat Road, Armoy, Co Antrim, was fined £300 and warned she could be sent to jail for up to a fortnight if she doesn't pay.

Appearing before Belfast Magistrates Court on crutches, she pleaded guilty to a single charge of theft.

A prosecution lawyer said she had been detained after leaving the store on December 31 with two bags containing unpaid for goods. The total value of items stolen amounted to £368.25.

"She can't explain why she has done this," the solicitor said.
