Sinn Fein gaffe put Derry boy racers plan at risk, claims SDLP
A costly police operation targeting boy racers may have to be scrapped, it has been claimed by the SDLP, after a Sinn Fein leaflet about it appeared on a website used by some of the culprits.
Residents living along the lower Strand Road area in Londonderry have been plagued by boy racers congregating at a nearby large car park and racing until the early hours of the morning.
A leaflet distributed to residents affected by the anti-social activity and informing them that the PSNI and DVA were planning a surprise operation, signed by Sinn Fein councillor Michael Cooper, fell into the hands of one of the boy racers who then posted it on a website used by the culprits.
SDLP councillor Shauna Cusack said: "The whole point of this operation was the surprise element, but now it may have to be scuppered completely." It is my expectation that this operation will go ahead and that a date has yet to be finalised."
A PSNI spokesman said: "We are working to address the issue of vehicular anti-social behaviour in the Lower Strand area."
