Sinn Fein MLA Conor Murphy in mourning for his uncle Joe McElhaw

By Staff Reporter

Sinn Fein in Newry has expressed sadness following the death of Joe McElhaw.

Mr McElhaw was described as a lifelong republican from Camlough in south Armagh, and was the uncle of Sinn Fein MLA Conor Murphy.

In a post on Twitter last night Mr Murphy described his uncle as a man who was also his friend and mentor.

He said Mr McElhaw was a “republican legend to us all in Camlough. Ar a dheis De go raibh a anam”.

In a statement Sinn Fein expressed its condolences to the family.

“We extend our sincerest sympathies to his wife Judy and the entire family circle at this sad time,” it said.

Mr McElhaw will be laid to rest following Mass at St Malachy’s Church in Camlough.

Mr Murphy previously served as MP for Newry and Armagh, Regional Development Minister in the Stormont Executive and as a member of Newry and Mourne  District Council.
