A Sinn Fein Assembly Member has apologised for an offensive remark on Twitter over the royal baby.

Phil Flanagan has been reported to the Commissioner for Standards Douglas Bain over the lewd joke which he retweeted to his 3,600 followers.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA insisted he had no intention of causing any offence.

He said: "In a split second error of judgment, I misconstrued the meaning of this tweet and retweeted it to my followers in that context.

"I apologise for any offence that this may have caused anyone."
