Soldiers' memorial vandalised
Wreaths at the memorial to three Scottish soldiers at White Brae, Ligoniel have been desecrated as a result of an arson attack just three weeks after the Highland Fusiliers annual service of remembrance.
North Belfast DUP MLA Nelson McCausland has condemned the act of vandalism, stating: "It is disgraceful and deeply offensive that this memorial has been desecrated.
"Just three weeks ago I attended the annual service of remembrance at the memorial at which wreaths were laid to mark the 41st anniversary of the murder of these three young Highland Fusiliers by the IRA.
"Members of their families and former colleagues travelled from Scotland to participate in that solemn ceremony as they have done every year in recent times.
"This is an utterly appalling act of intolerance and deliberate vandalism. It sends out all the wrong signals and must be condemned unequivocally across the political spectrum.
"Regrettably this is the second attack on the memorial within the past year, with graffiti being written and contents scattered last July.
"I would urge all people of influence within the local community to clearly express their rejection of these actions and to do all they can to prevent any repetition of these sectarian attacks in the future."
