Sporting heroes out in force for Dame Mary Peters and Rory McIlroy's fundraiser
A host of greats gathered at the Waterfront Hall yesterday for a joint fundraising Sporting Legends Lunch held by the Mary Peters Trust and the Rory McIlroy Foundation.
The guests teaming up in support of leading charitable organisation Sport Changes Life included two-time Olympic decathlon champion Daley Thompson; Northern Ireland football manager Michael O'Neill; former Ulster and Ireland rugby stars Stephen Ferris and Paddy Wallace; three-time All-Ireland winning Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte; actor Jimmy Nesbitt, broadcaster Colin Murray and our own Olympic gold medal winner Dame Mary Peters.
The event raised money to further the sporting and educational development of Northern Ireland's young sports people.
Dame Mary's trust and Rory's foundation launched a joint initiative last month to provide immediate, privately-funded health care for injured young athletes in the province.
Sport Changes Life aims to raise the aspirations of young people through sporting excellence, vocational and academic achievement.
The Mary Peters Trust helps young athletes, whatever their sport or social background, to realise their maximum potential by assisting in both a financial and advisory capacity.
