ASPIRING journalists at Belfast Metropolitan College will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of law in their profession direct from the coalface.
Paul McDonnell – a solicitor with McKinty and Wright who represents some of Northern Ireland's largest media concerns – will deliver a series of lectures on media law to students on the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Diploma over a 10-week period.
Assisted by McKinty and Wright Media team solicitor Timothy Cockram and trainee Fergal McGoldrick, Paul will deliver lectures on various topics including: defamation proceedings, reporting restrictions, contempt of court proceedings, reporting on sexual offences trials and open justice principles.
"This link-up will allow the students to gain an understanding of how the law is increasingly impacting on and curtailing their profession, direct from those involved in protecting the free Press on a daily basis," Mr McDonnell said.
