Supporters’ club honours Glentoran’s soccer legend
A new Glentoran supporters’ club has been set up in tribute to one of the club’s legends.
The Fred Roberts Glentoran Supporters’ Club was formed in June 2010.
It is named in honour of Glens’ great Fred Roberts, who played centre forward for the east Belfast side from 1928 to 1932.
He scored 332 goals in 221 appearances for the Glens.
Secretary William Kirkwood said he believes the club is “one of a kind”.
“We believe that we are the only Glentoran supporters’ club named after a former player, which makes us unique,” he said.
“Most of our current members come from the east Belfast area, but we also have members from Newtownards, Comber and Carrowdore.
“Our current membership stands at 17 and we would like very much to recruit new members. They would be welcomed with open arms into the club.
“The club meets in the Cock’n ’Hens bar, in Lord Street, off the Albertbridge Road. The bar is owned by former Glentoran player Rab McCreery and we would like to thank him for his support.”
Mr Kirkwood said the aims of the club were to support and promote Glentoran, to organise social events and functions for members —such as quiz nights, memorabilia events and talks — and appearances from Glentoran players and officials.
It also aims to help financially with the costs of trips to away fixtures in Europe for members.
Other benefits of membership include organised travel to away matches, priority ticket allocation and club news through texts and emails.
The price of membership of the club ranges from £10 to £30 per year, with discount for |families.
