Homes were evacuated yesterday as Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious device in Ballymena.
Police and Army were called to the scene at Dunclug Gardens off the Cushendall Road shortly after lunchtime yesterday following reports of a suspect object. Traffic had been diverted down Beech Drive from Cushendall Road for a time but the area was reopened a short time later.
A police spokesman said: “The security alert at the Cushendall Road, Ballymena area is now over. Officers have finished at the scene and one controlled explosion was carried out. The object was declared a hoax and has been taken away for further examination.”
Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Meanwhile, in north Belfast police investigated reports of a suspect package in the Oldpark Road area of north Belfast.
Officers carried out extensive searches but nothing was found. They appealed for the public to remain vigilant.
