Suspended sentence after gold chain eBay fraud
A Ballymena man who sold what he claimed to be a 9ct gold chain for £2,000 on Ebay but instead posted the buyers a stainless steel plug chain received a suspended sentence at a Ballymena Magistrates Court.
Brian Norman Simpson, 37 cited financial pressures over the Christmas period as the motivation behind his fraudulent sale.
The couple from England who purchased the chain were stunned to open the parcel, and in its place find a plug chain.
They informed Ebay immediately and Mr Simpson’s PayPal account was frozen to prevent the payment from being processed.
Mr Simpson received a five month sentence suspended for three years after he admitted to fraud by false representation.
District Judge, Des Perry said: "The one thing that saves you from prison is that this was such a ridiculous, outlandish piece of behaviour which was always going to be detected."
