Teenager in custody on traffic charges

BY GEORGE JACKSON

A teenager has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Magistrates Court in Londonderry charged with committing nine road traffic offences in the Groarty Road, Buncrana Road and Creggan areas of the city on Monday night and in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Emmett Noel Smith (19), from Marianus Park, is charged with stealing a pick-up van and crashing it into a police Land Rover.

He's also charged with dangerous driving, driving without insurance and without L plates, stealing car wheels and diesel valued at £220, possessing a pick-up van which had been stolen in Muff, Co Donegal, and also damaging a variety of cars and of car door handles.

Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said he was not in a position to make a bail application because no suitable address was available to the defendant.

District Judge Barney McElholm remanded the defendant in custody until Monday when a video-link bail application will be heard.
