A 17-year-old man has died in a crash on the M1 motorway involving a suspected stolen van.

The teenager was killed when the silver Transit van he was travelling in collided with a barrier near the Saintfield junction on the Belfast-bound side of the motorway at around 11pm last night.

It is understood the van had been stolen in the Republic of Ireland earlier last night.

Police investigating the collision have seized a red Ford Mondeo car, which was thought to have been travelling with the van, from an address in Lagmore, west Belfast.

Officers have appealed for witnesses and are keen to hear from anyone who saw the Transit van or the Mondeo on the M1 or A1 ahead of the collision.
