Teenager smashed in face by Belfast hammer attacker
A teenager has been left with serious facial injuries following an attack with a hammer in south Belfast.
The 18-year-old man was walking along Wellington Park Terrace at around 3am yesterday when he was approached by an unknown male who asked for cash before hitting the teen in the jaw with a hammer and stealing his iPod.
It is understood the teen, who is believed to live locally with his family, had difficulty speaking yesterday because of the severity of his injury.
His attacker is said to be aged in his late 20s with ginger hair and was wearing blue jeans and a blue Lonsdale top.
Neighbours in the area spoke of their disgust in the aftermath of the incident yesterday.
One woman said there had been a number of thefts in recent times, including a break-in at their house and damage to her partner’s car.
“I have lived here for a few years and to be honest myself and my partner want to get out of the city because of the number of times we’ve had incidents like this,” she said.
Another tourist staying in the nearby Malone Lodge Hotel said he heard a group of “young hooligans” in the street late on Monday evening and a member of the hotel staff is believed to have called the police.
