Warnings have been issued to young people to avoid the site of a former school where a fire was started deliberately.

Around 25 fire fighters tackled a blaze at the Immaculate Conception College in the Waterside of Londonderry yesterday.

The blaze is believed to have started in the gym, which was destroyed. While the fire was contained to that area, the entire building is now structurally unsound.

It was just the latest in a number of serious incidents at the site in recent weeks, including arson attempts and thefts.

One woman who lives nearby said teenagers had been using the site as a drinking den.

"You can see young ones hanging around there nearly every night of the week," she added.

Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson urged young people need to stay away from site for their own safety.

"I spoke to the Fire Service at the scene of this latest fire and they told me that although they were able to contain the blaze to the gym, the building is now structurally unsafe," he said.
