Teens quizzed by police officers on Belfast machete hijack bid

By Ed Carty

Two teenagers have been arrested after a taxi driver was threatened with a machete in an attempted hijacking just outside Belfast.

Police said the man was confronted in The Cutts area of Dunmurry after picking up a fare at about 4.45am yesterday.

The driver was threatened and an attempt made to force him out of the car at knife-point.

Police said a machete was recovered following the incident and a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man arrested a short distance away.

"The machete has been recovered by police and has been seized for examination," Inspector Jim McGrillen said.

The two arrested teenagers are being detained on suspicion of attempted hijacking.

Police said the taxi driver had collected the fare in the Divis Street area of west Belfast before being confronted in Dunmurry.
