The boss: New model of policing

April 1 marked the beginning of the biggest transformation that policing in recent years as a result of an identified need to align with new council structures combined with significant budget pressures. We have now moved from seven Policing Districts to 11.

As part of the restructure, we are prioritising 'Keeping People Safe' by developing a new model of policing to use our resources in the most efficient and effective way possible. As a result, we will move from the current mix of Response and Neighbourhood policing to the establishment of Local Policing Teams (LPTs) and Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) in every District by October 1. Jointly, their focus will remain on protecting people, preventing crime and detecting offenders through Policing with the Community.

The number of NPTs across Northern Ireland will reduce under this new structure from over 80 to 34, however ensuring a collaborative approach between the LPTs and NPTs will provide a more effective and efficient service.

Across Northern Ireland there will be 26 LPTs working alongside locally based detectives. These teams will respond to calls, conduct investigations and deal with community problems. They will provide advice and reassurance and spend time learning about what most affects communities in order to work with them to improve safety and quality of life. Individual officers will have geographic ownership of a particular area and will be expected to develop their local knowledge by engaging with civic leaders, clergy and local community groups etc to understand the needs of that community and how best to keep people safe.

The 34 NPTs will be based in areas with higher levels of crime and deprivation across Northern Ireland, and a number of other areas of rural isolation or particular policing need. They will provide a dedicated policing presence, reassurance and commitment to communities where it is most needed. Officers in these teams will be committed to building long-term relationships, addressing anti-social behaviour and helping communities resolve conflicts.
