Three arrested over petrol bombs find in east Belfast

BY STEVEN ALEXANDER

Three people have been arrested after police uncovered a petrol bomb factory in an area blighted by recent sectarian attacks.

Officers made the discovery yesterday at disused premises on Tower Street, east Belfast. It has since been dismantled and items recovered for examination.

Searches at another property in Tower Court led to the recovery of ammunition and fireworks.

East Belfast PSNI area commander Chief Inspector Mark McEwan said: “These seizures are significant and are a clear indication of our ongoing commitment to working with local communities to keep them safe.

“There has been an increase in tensions at the interface following a number of incidents that have occurred in both communities.”

Sectarian tensions in the Short Strand-Newtownards Road area are high, with tit-for-tat attacks on a near nightly basis.

A four-year-old girl suffered minor burns when a petrol bomb landed near her last week. Four devices were hurled in the Bryson Street area on Monday night.

Five were thrown at a house in the Strand Walk area on Sunday.
