Three face trial over bomb find in holdall

BY George Jackson

Three Londonderry men have been returned for trial after an improvised explosive device was found in a rucksack when police stopped and searched a car in the city last year.

The three defendants – Jason Ceulemans (40), from Lecky Road; Damien Harkin (47), from Westland Avenue; and Neil Hegarty (48), from Sackville Court – are jointly charged with conspiring to cause an explosion with an explosively formed projectile last December 6.

At a bail hearing in June, the High Court heard that the projectile contained 200g of Semtex.

The device was inside a holdall found in a Renault Megane being driven by Ceulemans – who was described as a card-carrying member of Sinn Fein – when it was stopped at Westway in the Creggan area on December 6 last year.

A judge was told it was copper-tipped and able to be either thrown or deployed from a stationary position.

The three are also all charged with possessing the device with intent and with possessing a walkie- talkie radio and a torch on suspicion the articles were to be used in an act of terrorism.
