A man from Co Antrim has admitted spitting at paramedics and wrecking life-saving equipment as they rushed him to hospital.

Ryan Robert Patrick McCambridge (20), of Meadowbank in Martinstown near Ballymena, admitted three charges of assault when he appeared at Coleraine Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He also admitted two charges of causing criminal damage to an ambulance and its defibrillator, as well as disorderly behaviour at Causeway Hospital.

Defence barrister Ben Thompson said the incident started on July 11 and "spilled over" into the 12th. He said his client spat at paramedics and caused £2,000 worth of damage to a defibrillator with a "flailing kick".

Mr Thompson said the defendant is making amends and paying restitution.

McCambridge was released on his own bail of £250 to appear back at court later this month.

Another charge of making a threat to kill the paramedics has yet to be dealt with.
