The Titanic Schools Project 2009 was launched this month at south Belfast’s Belvoir Park Primary School.

South Belfast MP Dr Alasdair McDonnell, who is president of the project, said he is delighted that over 1,000 young people will be involved.

Dr McDonnell said: “The Titanic Schools Project is growing from strength-to-strength each year. In 2008 it involved over 600 children from four countries, this year it will involve 1,000 children from four continents.

“I am delighted to be part of this project which gives young people from very different backgrounds the chance to work together and learn from each other.

“The enthusiasm of the pupils involved is always overwhelming and they put a tremendous amount of hard work into their projects.”

The project, which began in 2005, is run on a cross-community basis, twinning schools from all over Northern Ireland with each other and with other schools across the world.

It encourages pupils to study the journey of the Titanic from its construction to its launch on May 31, 1911.

For the first time this year the project will also formally link-up schools north and south of the border.
