Tortoise stealing alcoholic jailed
A man has been jailed for nine months for stealing a tortoise and a homeless man's mobile phone.
David Weir escaped with the £250 reptile from a Belfast pet store in August last year and sold it for £60 to feed his alcohol addiction. He also took a phone from a vulnerable man who was eating a takeaway meal in a city centre alleyway.
Sentencing Weir to consecutive four-month and five-month jail terms at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday, District Judge Desmond Perry said the man would steal anything.
Weir (30), from Berlin Street, Belfast, pleaded guilty to charges of theft for both offences.
Defence barrister Michael Ward told the court that the animal was fit and well the last time Weir saw it. However, it was accepted that the defendant did not know where it was now. Judge Perry remarked that it couldn't have got very far.
Weir targeted the homeless man earlier this month.
