A stolen tractor careered through a metal fence after its driver leapt from the cab in a bid to escape arrest, police have revealed.

The incident happened when police officers became suspicious after spotting the tractor being driven into a industrial estate on south Antrim's Seven Mile Straight late on Sunday night.

A blue Peugeot car was seen speeding from the area - but was intercepted by officers, and its driver arrested.

The expensive New Holland tractor had been stolen - along with a second tractor - from commercial vehicle premises on the Michelin Road in Mallusk earlier the same evening.

The owners of the tractors did not know they had been stolen and the second tractor has not yet been recovered.

A police spokesperson said that they are still searching for the second tractor.

Police have appealed for landowners in mid and east Antrim to check their land and machinery - and to report any unusual tractor movements to the police by calling 101.
