Tractor thief sniffed out in Newry
A man suspected of stealing a tractor was tracked down by sniffer dogs after police failed to stop him when he drove past.
The 24-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards when the blue Ford New Holland tractor was abandoned in a laneway and police dogs were able to pick up his scent.
Police in Newry were alerted to the theft of the tractor from premises in Magheralin around 12.15am on Wednesday.
The theft was circulated to nearby patrolling officers and about an hour later, at 1.15am, officers on patrol in the Newry and Mourne area spotted the tractor travelling on Keggal Road and attempted to stop it. However, the vehicle failed to stop and continued in the direction of Meigh.
A short time later it was discovered abandoned and the sniffer dogs traced the young man who was subsequently arrested and is now assisting police with their inquiries.
