The funeral took place on Friday of 19-year-old Allyn Baxter who died on remand at Hydebank Young Offenders’ Centre last week.
The Prisoner Ombudsman is investigating the incident following Mr Baxter’s death in hospital on Wednesday. It is believed he had attempted to take his own life on Saturday at the YOC.
Mr Baxter, from Lisburn, is survived by his father, Billy, young son Kiaran, sister and two brothers.
In a statement the Prison Service expressed “sincere condolences” to his family.
SDLP justice committee member Conall McDevitt has urged Justice Minister David Ford to review Hydebank’s regime.
The South Belfast MLA said the fact that many inmates were on remand and not yet charged with crimes put it out of step with international practice.
“This, in itself, is a wholly unacceptable position.”
He said many inmates suffered mental illness and received inadequate support.
“There is an urgent need for the Executive to develop much stronger polices to address the mental health problems in the criminal justice system,” Mr McDevitt added.
