Two foreign nationals are jailed over sham weddings
Two members of a bogus wedding party have been jailed.
They were arrested on July 14 after organising a sham marriage ceremony at Banbridge Registry Office.
Ansar Mahmood, a 27-year-old Pakistani, was arrested as he was about to wed 19-year-old Latvian Inese Millere.
Jekaterina Dolgu, a 27-year-old Latvian, who was acting as a witness, was also arrested, along with Asif Nadeem, a 34-year-old Pakistani.
Mahmood and Nadeem both pleaded guilty at a previous hearing at Newry Crown Court on November 24.
Mahmood was jailed for 11 months for acting as a witness to a sham marriage at Newry Registry Office on June 15 and seeking leave to remain in the UK by deception on July 14.
Nadeem was jailed for 11 months for seeking leave to remain in the UK by deception by taking part in a sham marriage at Newry Registry Office on June 15.
Millere and Dolgu were both sentenced to nine months suspended for two years for agreeing to take part in the sham marriage in Banbridge and acting as a witness to a sham marriage at Newry Registry Office on June 15.
