Two held over 'dissident activity'

Two people have been arrested by police in Northern Ireland investigating dissident republican activity following an MI5 sting operation.

A 50-year-old man and a woman aged 46 were detained during property searches in Newry, Co Down, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The arrests are part of an investigation which resulted in the detention of 12 people in the city in November based on MI5 intelligence.

Detective Superintendent Karen Baxter said: "Detectives from Serious Crime Branch have arrested a man and a woman in relation to dissident republican activity.

"They have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite for questioning."

Twelve people were arrested in Ardcarn Park in Newry on November 10 as part of the same investigation.

The detentions come ahead of the Prince of Wales's visit to Northern Ireland this week.
