Two illegal staff at restaurant arrested

By Victoria O'Hara

Two illegal restaurant workers have been arrested in a raid carried out by the UK Border Agency - and more operations are planned.

The agency targeted the Star of Bengal takeaway in the Abbey Street area of Bangor, Co Down, on June 3.

The enforcement operation was carried out as part of a nationwide campaign to tackle immigration crime.

Following checks on employees at the restaurant, two Bangladeshi men, aged 21 and 33-years-old, were arrested for immigration offences.

One man had overstayed his visa and was working illegally and the other had absconded from previous immigration bail.

Both were detained overnight in Musgrave Street Police Station in Belfast.

Steps are now being taken to remove the 21-year-old from the UK. The other man was released pending further inquiries and told to report weekly to the UK Border Agency offices in Belfast.
