Two men have been jailed for their part in a £300,000 VAT scam.

Robert Martin Milligan (42), of Sydney Lane in Portavogie, and his business partner, Gary Smyth (36), of The Gables, Portaferry, were sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Downpatrick Crown Court yesterday.

HMRC found that the pair, both directors of R&G Plastering Limited, submitted fake invoices claiming to have bought building supplies and materials between 2008 and 2012.

In total 747 invoices were submitted totalling £298,784.

Mike Parkinson, assistant director of criminal investigation for HMRC, said: "Milligan and Smyth deliberately set out to create a false paper trail to claim money they weren't entitled to."
