Two men charged over street disorder in a Co Antrim estate appeared in court yesterday.

Colin Simms (36) and 46-year-old Robert Surgenor were arrested after a number of masked men gathered in Carrickfergus at the start of the month.

Officers dispersed the crowd and seized items including a crossbow while fire crews dealt with a bonfire.

Simms, of Blackthorn Park in the town, is charged with causing a dangerous article and material to be on a road, namely tyres. Surgenor, from Drummond Court in Larne, Co Antrim, is accused of riotous behaviour.

At Belfast Magistrates' Court, Simms' lawyer confirmed his client would be pleading not guilty. With a date for a contested hearing set to be fixed in two weeks, Simms was released on bail.

Surgenor, meanwhile, nodded when asked if he understood the charge against him.

He was also released and told to return to court in four weeks for an update on the case.
