Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder by police investigating the sectarian killing of a popular civil servant in Northern Ireland.

Paul McCauley, a 38-year-old Catholic, spent almost a decade in a vegetative state after he was attacked by loyalists at a barbecue in the Waterside area of Londonderry in July 2006.

He died in a care home last month.

Two men, aged 28 and 36, were arrested in Londonderry and Coleraine on Thursday morning. A 27-year-old woman was detained in Derry on suspicion of withholding information.

Police stepped up their investigation into the attack following Mr McCauley's death.

The father-of-one was 29 when he attended the barbecue for a friend who was moving away from Northern Ireland.

A gang of up to 15 people emerged from nearby bushes and attacked him and two friends as they were clearing up after the meal in the early hours of the morning. He sustained severe head injuries.

Mr McCauley's family has pursued a long campaign for justice.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective chief inspector Michael Harvey, said: "I want to thank those individuals who have come forward with information regarding the murder of Paul McCauley and attempted murder of his two friends.

"This is a very active investigation. I would like to make a further appeal for information from anyone who was at or near the scene of the brutal attack on Paul and his two friends which occurred at 105 Chapel Road in Londonderry.
