Two young cousins die after one vehicle crash in Derry
Two young cousins have died following a one vehicle crash in Londonderry.
It happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning on the Victoria Road between Newbuildings and Magheramason.
At this stage the ages of the men, who were cousins, are unknown.
Following the collision two people are in a stable condition in hospital.
Inspector Jonny Hunter is appealing for anyone who was traveling on the Victoria Road between 3 am and 3.30 am and saw a black Volkswagon Golf travelling from Strabane in the direction of Derry to contact police at Strand Road on the non emergency number 101.
The Victoria Road remains closed and diversions are in place.
SDLP West Tyrone MLA Joe Byrne said the road crash demanded urgent intervention from government to address safety concerns.
Mr Byrne said: “I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn about this tragedy that has claimed the lives of two young men early this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
“My thoughts, too, are with those who were injured in the accident. They, and their families, will also be going through a traumatic time and I know that the local community will offer them every support.
“This tragedy emphasises the need for significant changes to the roads infrastructure in this area. We need to urgently upgrade the A5 to improve safety and avert future accidents which shatter the lives of local families and send shockwaves through our community.
"It is imperative now that we see urgent intervention from government to address the concerns about the roads network in the west. Nothing else will do.
“I understand that the police are appealing for any information about this accident. I would encourage anyone with any information to bring it forward so that we can piece together what happened this morning.”
Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton has expressed his sympathy following the deaths.
Mr Middleton said: "This is another tragic example of two young men losing their lives on our roads. Living in Newbuildings I know this road very well and I would hope that information can be gathered to establish exactly what happened.
"I know one of the other passengers who was travelling in the car and I will be visiting some of the families as soon as possible. I want to pass on my sympathies to those families who have suffered such a terrible loss today and hope that those who are in hospital might make a speedy recovery."
