A security alert at a tyre depot in Strabane caused chaos for several hours yesterday while Army Technical Officers were dealing with a suspicious object.

A member of staff at Caldwell's Tyre Depot in Bridge Street spotted the suspicious device after lunchtime, which resulted in the evacuation of businesses and a residential home.

Bridge Street, Strabane's main shopping thoroughfare, was closed. The alert was later declared an elaborate hoax.

Community worker Andy Gallagher said: "This was the worst place for something like this to happen.

Bridge Street is a major junction in the town and the elderly people at Mulvey House residential home had to be evacuated. People that age deserve better."
