An All-Ireland winner who battled a gambling addiction and ended up taking part in a pornographic film plans to tell his story in an autobiography.

Tyrone Gaelic footballer Cathal McCarron took to Twitter yesterday to publicise his forthcoming book, due out later this year.

McCarron - the Dromore and Tyrone corner-back who was a panellist when the Red Hand county won the 2008 All-Ireland - has had a well-publicised battle with a gambling addiction that has led to a number of low points in his personal life, including theft and taking part in a pornographic video.

Now he has teamed up with publishing house Simon & Schuster, and ghost-writer Christy O'Connor - the former Clare hurling goalkeeper and author of the award-winning book 'The Club' - for 'Out of Control'.

It tells the story of McCarron's emergence in Gaelic football, his addictions and his problems.

After news of his gambling habit became public, he moved to London seeking a fresh start, but his problems continued and a video featuring him engaging in sexual activity went public.

At the time, the GAA community lent their support to the troubled footballer, with Joe Brolly tweeting: "Cathal McCarron needs our support. Kid is in a bad place.

"Hard to know how it got so bad. Time for Gaels to rally round".

GAA figures brought McCarron into a recovery programme and he received much support from manager Mickey Harte among others.

McCarron has made significant strides in his recovery since, returning home to Tyrone to play for his county in their run to the All-Ireland semi-final last season, when he was nominated for an All-Star award after a series of impressive displays.

'Out of Control: How my addiction almost killed me and my road to redemption' is expected to be on the shelves sometime after Tyrone exit the All-Ireland championship.

McCarron tweeted a picture of the jacket of the book with the message: "Delighted to be releasing my autobiography later this year".

The book jacket reads: 'Cathal McCarron is a 28-year-old inter-county footballer from Tyrone.

'A winner of one All-Ireland senior medal and three Ulster titles, he was nominated for an All-Star in 2013 and 2015.

'Yet behind all that success lay an extremely dark secret, a gambling addiction that cost him hundreds of thousands of pounds, endless relationships and, almost, his life.

"The illness took such a grip on McCarron that he was forced to leave the country but the addiction led him down an even darker path and into a world of total depravity where he was willing to do anything for money.

'Out of Control is a sports story unlike any other, a tale of success, lies, deceit, theft, recovery, rehabilitation and ultimately, redemption'.

McCarron played in Sunday's Ulster semi-final draw with Cavan and has been one of the most consistent Tyrone players over the past two seasons.
