Tributes have been paid to a young man from Co Tyrone who died in a car crash in the Irish Republic.

Gareth Wilson was aged in his 20s and from the Tattyreagh area near Fintona.

The accident happened just before 6pm on Sunday on the Station Road in Cootehill, Co Cavan.

Gareth was a passenger in a car which struck a wall.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second passenger in the vehicle was airlifted to St James's Hospital in Dublin and the driver was taken to Cavan General Hospital.

Gareth was a past pupil of Omagh CBS and had also studied at South West College.

He worked for McKenna Precision Engineering Ltd.

Yesterday, heartbroken friends paid tribute to him on his Facebook site.

His girlfriend, Alannah, wrote: "Thanks for two years of memories, I'll treasure them forever."

She added: "Love you always."

One friend wrote: "Heaven's gained another angel. I couldn't believe the news. Sleep tight."

Gareth, of Crotty Road in Tattyreagh, was the son of Ellie Callaghan and Lewis Wilson. He was the brother of Ashley Callaghan, Amy Wilson, Kyle McCluskey and Julie McCrea.

West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said it was another black week on the roads.

"This morning another Omagh family have had to bear unimaginable pain after the loss of yet another young life in a car accident," he said.

"In the past seven days, seven young people from Tyrone and Donegal, all in their 20s, have died on our roads. The death of any young person is an utter tragedy and one that affects the entire community.

"I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Gareth's family and friends at this very sad and difficult time," he added.

Meanwhile, police have named the motorcyclist who died in a crash near Newtownards on Sunday afternoon.

Jay Curtis Reardon (21) was from Holywood Hills.

The collision occurred at around 12.50pm on the Belfast Road close to the junction with Milecross Road.

In a separate incident, a 16-year-old girl remains seriously ill in hospital after being hit by a car in Co Armagh on Friday evening. Justine McConville was struck on Lake Street in Lurgan.

The PSNI said: "We want to find out what happened to Justine for her sake and the sake of her family."

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should contact police at Lurgan on 101, quoting reference number 1310 29/07/16.
