Tyrone man is Ireland's youngest priest at 25
A Tyrone man has become Ireland’s youngest priest.
At 25 years old, Ryan McAleer has become the youngest member of a club whose average age is 64.
The young man from Rock was ordained alongside Thomas McHugh (26) from Castledawson, Co Londonderry, by Cardinal Sean Brady in St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh, yesterday.
It was a rare double ordination for the Catholic Church in Ireland at a time when the number of young men joining seminaries has plummeted.
“I believe I'm the youngest for a week but there is someone coming who will be a little younger,” said Fr Ryan before the ceremony.
Admitting feeling “a little daunted” about the life he was taking on, he insisted he has never doubted his calling.
