Ulster’s honours list led by academic and coachworks founder

By Adrian Rutherford, Ursula McKinley and Anne Madden

The vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University and the founder of Wrightbus are among the people from Northern Ireland recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Peter Gregson, who has served as vice-Chancellor since 2004, receives a knighthood while William Wright becomes a CBE.

The 53 people recognised here include representatives from the worlds of education, health, sport and politics, along with volunteers from charities and community organisations.

Mr Gregson, who receives his accolade for services to higher education, said he was humbled to be recognised by the Queen.

“It is enormously humbling to receive this honour,” he said.

“Throughout my career I’ve been inspired by successive generations of students and by my peers around the world.

“Any contribution I have made has been through the magnificent teams of people with whom I have been privileged to work, and with the support of my wife and family.”

After being appointed in 2004, Mr Gregson oversaw Queen’s accession to the elite Russell Group of universities.

During his term in office he has played a leading role in the development of the state-of-the-art McClay Library.

Meanwhile, Mr Wright is recognised for services to the bus industry in Northern Ireland.

He founded Wrightbus in 1946, and the company has since become one of the UK’s leading bus manufacturers.

Other CBE recipients include the chief inspector of schools Stanley Goudie; Mary Quinn, head of maintenance enforcement at the Child Support Agency, and Mark Huffam, a film and television producer.

Mr Huffam was responsible for the production of the Game Of Thrones fantasy series in Northern Ireland, one of the largest television series ever to be shot outside the US.

Among the nine people to have been awarded an OBE is David Lyle from Bangor, who is recognised for services to road safety.

As chief executive of advertising agency Lyle Bailie International he has headed up a team responsible for a series of award-winning and hard-hitting road safety advertisements.

Other OBE recipients include David McClurg, the chairman of the Northern Ireland Police Fund, and Bill Webb, until recently the chief executive of the Progressive Building Society.

A further 39 people receive an MBE, including Phyllis Carrothers, the chair of the RUC George Cross Widows’ Association for the past three years, who is recognised for services to the community.

In 1991 her husband Douglas, a part-time RUC Reservist, was killed when an IRA bomb exploded under his car outside the family home in Co Fermanagh.

Gary Trew, who has been leader of Antrim Gateway Club for 23 years, is recognised for services to special needs.

Police constable Peter Connolly, who has served the west Belfast community for 25 years, is also awarded the MBE, as is Karen Todd, head of the Police pensions branch.

Among the other recipients are Dr Peter Cunningham, principal of Ceara Special School (services to education), William Dawson from Ballynahinch (voluntary service to leukaemia research) and Cecil Walker, honoured for services to cricket in Northern Ireland.

Brian Wilson, a 40-year-old drum major from Armagh who has won the World Drum Major Championships twice, is the youngest recipient.
