Just three days into the long-awaited £5m redevelopment of a historic park in Londonderry, “ridiculous” vandals have destroyed a £200,000 bulldozer.
The vehicle was being used to help create an outdoor pitch and events area for the community at the site of old football pitches.
Meetings were taking place on site yesterday to assess the extent of the damage caused at Brooke Park.
Derry City Council, which is spearheading the project, vowed yesterday that it would press ahead with the work.
A spokeswoman said: “While criminal damage of this nature impacts negatively on the community, Derry City Council and funding partners will ensure the investment will continue to realise the park’s full potential.”
SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan expressed outrage at the destruction caused.
“It seems to me that this was a deliberate, planned attack as opposed to an act of wanton vandalism,” he said.
MLA Maeve McLaughlin added: “It absolutely ridiculous that anyone would even contemplate carrying out such wanton acts of destruction.”
The PSNI has appealed for anyone with information about the attack, which was reported at 3.20am on Saturday, to contact Strand Road Police Station on 0845 600 8000.
