Vandals only hurting community, says MLA Sammy Douglas after Connswater Greenway attack
An East Belfast MLA has said those who vandalised construction equipment on the Connswater Greenway are hurting their own community.
The £40m project will create a 9km linear park linking the existing Connswater, Knock and Loop Rivers.
But over the last few weeks, construction equipment belonging to the contractor behind the project has been damaged, and newly laid paths have been destroyed in acts of vandalism. Graffiti was sprayed on machinery and a tool shed was set on fire on Monday last week.
Two days later, windows on a mechanical pile-driver were damaged and an attempt was made to set the digger on fire.
DUP MLA Sammy Douglas condemned those responsible.
"I am bitterly disappointed that over recent days there have been a number of incidents of vandalism and anti-social behaviour in areas where contractors are working," he said.
"Such behaviour is actually an attack on the local community who will benefit from the improvements being created."
