A north Belfast man accused of attempting to hijack three vehicles on the same street on the same day - including a bus with 10 passengers on board - has been refused bail.

Kenneth Neil Colwell - who is currently on remand in Maghaberry Prison - is facing six charges linked to three attempted hijackings on Belfast's North Street earlier this year.

At Belfast Crown Court yesterday a solicitor acting on behalf of Colwell, of Forthriver Link, applied for compassionate bail. The solicitor asked that the 24-year-old be released for several days over the festive period to spend time with his partner and their two-year-old daughter.

However, after listening to submissions from the Crown and defence, and taking into consideration Colwell's "very extensive record" of 40 previous convictions, coupled with the fears raised over reoffending and absconding, the judge refused the application for bail.
