Police said a "very old non-functioning" device was the cause of a security alert in Lurgan.

Windsor Avenue in the Co Armagh town was closed and a home evacuated following the discovery of a suspect package.

The Army bomb squad attended and carried out a controlled explosion on the device as a precaution.

Police were unable to say at this stage just how old the device was.

Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: "ATO attended the report of a suspicious object and carried out a controlled explosion at approximately 3.10pm. The object appears to have been a very old device which was no longer capable of functioning but was made safe as a precaution."

All roads have been reopened and residents allowed to return to their homes.
