Victim’s parents in malaria fundraiser
A couple from Londonderry whose son died of malaria while backpacking in Asia are holding a fundraising vigil until Christmas Eve.
Martin and Mary Gallagher lost their son Christopher (23) to malaria in 2003.
They established the Christy Gallagher Memorial Malaria Fund with the charity Children in Crossfire to raise funds for malaria prevention in some of the world’s poorest regions.
But a trip to Tanzania to see how the £12,000 they have raised so far is being used affected the couple so much they decided to redouble their efforts.
They will now be fundraising outside the Guildhall from 8am to 10pm every day, including Christmas Eve.
Martin said: “Our son died from malaria while he was out backpacking and that just devastated us. While there is nothing we can do for him now, it is important to us that we can stop others dying like him.
“We are confident that it will be worthwhile.”
