Victorian Derry rail station to be restored
Councillors in Londonderry have voiced their support for plans to restore the old Victorian Waterside railway station and make it the city’s main rail terminus.
It follows a campaign by the Into the West lobby group to have the former building, which served as the main link with Belfast until 1980, replace the more modern facility beside it.
Northern Ireland Railways is considering a new station in Dublin to cope with increased passenger numbers following upgrades of rail links with the city.
A spokesman for Into the West said the former building was an architectural jewel which could be displayed in its original setting.
