Walk leaders to fight flab in North West

Published 02/04/2012

Sixteen “walk leaders” have been trained in Londonderry to lead the fight against flab in the north west as figures reveal nearly two out of three adults in Northern Ireland are fat.

The Western Health and Social Care Trust’s health improvement department is encouraging local people to ‘fight the flab’ by participating in a walking group following the alarming evidence that obesity cuts life expectancy by as much as nine years.

Commenting on a recent obesity document from the Department of Health, the Western trust’s health improvement officer Lesley Finlay told the Londonderry Sentinel: “There are many health benefits associated with walking, including maintaining a healthy weight.

“Fifty-nine per cent of adults in Northern Ireland are either overweight (36%) or obese (23%),” she said.
