West Winds traffic survey
DRD Roads Service is to assess traffic speeds and movements at the West Winds and Comber Road in Newtownards.
The move follows a request by DUP MLA Simon Hamilton who had been approached by residents, concerned that the speed of traffic along the Comber Road passing the West Winds and Lansdowne Road had increased after the opening of the new distributor road.
Roads Service has already carried out a survey at the Lansdowne Road junction.
Mr Hamilton said constituents were worried about both the speed and volume of traffic along the main road. “I am regularly in and out of the West Winds and the situation there is every bit as bad if not worse and residents there have raised the issue with me as well. A right turn at both junctions can at times be hazardous and time consuming with drivers frequently taking unnecessary chances.”
He said the new distributor road had been a great success, with the queues along the Comber Road a thing of the past, but added: “There is a growing population in the area and it is only right that the impact of the new road and increased traffic volumes and speeds be assessed and that any adverse effect on road safety is addressed.”
