IT'S not how unionist election candidates usually canvass - by taking down Union flags.

But former Royal Irish Regiment captain Doug Beattie is fighting the Stormont campaign his own way.

While knocking on doors in the Parkmore area of his Portadown home town on Saturday, the Ulster Unionist decided he'd had enough of the tattered flags hanging from lampposts.

But rather than just complain about his flag being disrespected, the Upper Bann Assembly candidate took matters into his own hands. The UUP councillor returned yesterday with a step ladder and removed the ripped flags.

Last night, the Military Cross winner posted photographs of his latest mission on Facebook, alongside the hashtag #‎FlagsNotRags

"Canvassing yesterday in Parkmore & saw the state of some Union & Ulster Flags," he wrote.

"Today I took them down."
