Will top golfers be absentees for Rory McIlroy's wedding?

By AMANDA FERGUSON

He's looking forward to what is bound to be a star-studded celebrity wedding – but will Rory McIlroy's fellow Northern Irish golfers be at the party?

Rory will be the third of our trio of Major winners to walk down the aisle when he weds Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki (23).

But it is yet to be confirmed whether 2011 Open winner Darren Clarke or 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell will attend.

McDowell attended Dungannon player Clarke's wedding to former Miss Northern Ireland Alison Campbell in 2012 after playing matchmaker and introducing the pair in 2009.

However, Clarke wasn't able to be present at McDowell's nuptials in October, when he married US beauty Kristin Stape.

Rory did not attend either of the two golfers' weddings. It was reported at the time that Rory missed McDowell's Caribbean wedding because he feared an awkward showdown with his former agent, who had been invited.

Eyebrows were raised when the 24-year-old was absent but McIlroy blamed work commitments. A friend insisted there was no fall-out.

Both McDowell and Clarke held their weddings in the Bahamas – although the bookies believe Rory and Caroline will stay on this side of the Atlantic. They also believe 2015 is the year the sports couple will tie the knot.

Paddy Power is offering odds of 2/1 that Rory (24) and Danish tennis player Caroline will get hitched somewhere in Ireland.

The pair will no doubt consider Rory's picturesque seaside home town of Holywood or could head to the Lough Erne Resort in Co Fermanagh, the luxury golf venue that is home to one of his favourite courses.

The young couple got engaged in Sydney on New Year's Day, announcing it on Twitter.

Australia is a destination that they have enjoyed spending time in since they began dating in 2011, so a wedding Down Under could be on the cards. But the bookies think Denmark, the bride's native country, will be the preferred venue for their big day.

BACKGROUND

At 10.09pm UK time on December 31, tweets from the pair were accompanied by photos of them together, the New Year fireworks display in Sydney and a third snap of Caroline's huge diamond engagement ring. Rory tweeted: "Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!" Caroline said: "Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! I said YES!!!"
