Despite recent days of glorious sunshine and the hopeful signs of spring over the last couple of weeks, winter has not released its icy grip.

Temperatures took a dive over the weekend, hovering around the freezing mark and by Saturday evening flurries of sleet and snow were seen across Northern Ireland.

By the early hours of yesterday morning the mountains surrounding Belfast were tipped with white.

Mother's Day felt more like Christmas Day as reports came in of snow showers from Dungiven and across the Sperrins to Belfast, Lisburn and Moira, and lying on the higher ground in Co Derry.

The gloomy weather has arrived after days of spring sunshine and temperatures that sometimes reached double digits.

Sadly, it's not time to put away the winter woolies just yet

The Met Office has reported that although the snow showers will ease off today they can still be expected on higher ground along the east cost. Northern Ireland is set for a chilly week.
