A 24-year-old woman has been assaulted after a masked gang broke into a house in north Belfast.

Police said they believed the attackers had a handgun and baseball bats when they forced their way into the property in Greenland Street on Thursday.

A 25-year-old man managed to flee through a back window.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Hamlin said: "We believe that at least one of these men may have been in possession of a handgun, the others were armed with baseball bats."

Extensive damage was also caused when the four men ransacked the ground floor of the house.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw a dark coloured Volkswagen saloon car that was reported to be in the area at about 9.30pm.

Police can be contacted on 101.
